                 Children And Self Esteem
By Elaine Dorvault

Self esteem is the value we place on ourselves; what we think
of ourselves. It is knowing that we are lovable, capable and that
we are unique. Good Self-esteem means having a healthy view
of yourself, having a quiet sense of self-worth, having a positive
attitude and positive outlook about life, feeling satisfied with
yourself most of the time, setting realistic goals and feeling
proud when your goals have been achieved.
Our self-esteem is first shaped by our parents, and is further
influenced as we develop relationships with other family
members, friends, teachers, coaches, and other adults.
As a parent, we have the greatest influence in shaping our
children's sense of self-worth; we are their first and most
important teacher. In order to help our children build their
self-esteem, we must develop and maintain our own sense of
self-worth. Some steps which will help our children to build
self-esteem are:
1) Love And Acceptance
Show your children that they are loved and accepted for who
they are. Children need to know that they are worthy of love,
even if they behave badly sometimes. Give love with no strings
attached, and spend time together. Praise them often for a job
well done, and say "I Love You" every day.
2)Security And Safely
Providing a safe physical environment, and setting clear rules
and limits will provide your child with a sense of security and
safely, allowing them to take the next step: To try new things
and to learn about themselves. When children feel safe, they
are less likely to be afraid of failure.
3)Belonging
Children need to know that they are important, in order to feel
comfortable, safe and secure, and open to communication.
Help children build valuable family and community
relationships, encourage pride in their heritage and family
history, and encourage participation in family events. When
children feel that they are an important person, within a family
unit, they will have a good sense of belonging.
4)Respect
Children will develop respect for themselves and for others if
they learn that what they think, feel and do is important. If you
put them down or call them demeaning names, your children
will feel unworthy. Criticism or punishment, which is too harsh,
will prevent them from developing confidence in themselves.
By accepting your children's right to have feelings, you can help
them learn to respect the feelings of others.
5)Confidence
Give your children support and approval, and compliment them
often for jobs well done. Children who have faith and
confidence in themselves and their abilities will be more likely
to lead happy and productive lives. Teach your children to learn
from their mistakes, to have pride in their successes, and work
towards a goal.
These are just some of the necessary steps in helping to build
a child's self-esteem. The most valuable thing we can do to
help children grow up healthy and happy is build their
self-esteem - their self-image. Children who are happy with
themselves will likely have fewer behavioural problems, less
run-ins with the law, and have a better outlook on life and on
their own ability to succeed in life, and to reach their goals.
